To compete with YouTube.. TikTok allows its users to produce video clips of up to 20 minutes

Chinese short video-sharing app TikTok said it will allow some content creators to produce longer clips for a price, opening a new door for its users to earn money.

Its new service, Cerise, will allow eligible content creators to place batches of up to 80 long videos, each up to 20 minutes long, behind a "paywall". The longest time TikTok allows for videos is currently ten minutes.

Having revolutionized a social media space largely dominated by Facebook (NASDAQ) and Instagram-owned Meta platforms with short videos and a sophisticated recommendation engine, TikTok is now entering the competition with another giant, Google's YouTube.

TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, said its users are increasingly turning to its platform to produce content such as spreadsheets, physical exercises and recipes, an area where YouTube remains the dominant destination.

It is not yet clear if TikTok will receive payment from content creators for this. The app already offers tips and gifts to its users, in addition to managing a fund to motivate them to increase their followers.

TikTok reached 1 billion monthly active users in September 2022, and its user base has not been reported since. By comparison, Facebook had nearly three billion active monthly users in December 2022.
